Lovepan 2025

To "pan" comes from the idea of "hitting pan" or using up pressed makeup until you could see the metal pan of the container it's in. In the context of Project Pan, to "pan" means to finish a product.

Technically it's normal programming to want to finish a product, but Project Pan emphasizes the goal to finish it within a certain timeframe while imposing rules that encourage underconsumption, like not allowing yourself to buy another lipstick until you finished one already in your collection, or if you just want to finish a product before moving on to more fun items in your collection.

The thing about Project Pans cr: 30 January 2025

The main goal in Project Pan is "use up all the makeup". You make think "well yeah, duh, who wouldn't? Why is there a special challenge for it?" which is a valid question.

I think an equally important benefit Project Pan does for people is to ground them to reality regarding makeup usage. If you look more into Project Pan, you'd find that many challenges within it seem to be designed with people with huge makeup collections in mind— those who realistically could not finish all the makeup in their collection within their entire lifetime yet continue to buy more products. Those people are the prime target audience of Project Pan and not really beginners or non-makeup lovers. Project Pan helps these people by allowing them to experience firsthand how much does a makeup product really take to use up completely with the prospect of being able to make better decisions when buying given this knowledge.

Project Pan is not a solve-all solution to overconsumption and it is very much just a bandaid solution to overconsumption. But that doesn't mean it's unnecessary for beginners to participate in Project Pan. In fact I think beginners are one of the demographics that are most prone to engaging in overconsumption. Project Pan has a great positive impact on reducing overconsumption when encouraged early on because it's easier to prevent a problem than to solve one.
